The Tendrr Guide to Sailing Schools

What is a sailing school?

If you want to learn to sail then there are several ways of going about it. You can learn on the job and get real experience on sail boats. If you want to go down this route there are hundreds of sailing opportunities every season on Tendrr, so be sure to create your profile, make yourself “available” for any events that are of interest, and browse the current sailing opportunities.

At some point you may want some formal sailing training which is usually offered by an approved sailing school. Although sailing schools vary in style any approved courses will cover core course content. Sailing courses are often primarily practical hands-on sailing lessons under the tutelage of experienced skippers, but there can also be an element of study or classroom theory (for example around charts and route planning) depending on what skills you want to gain and what level you are working towards.

How does sailing school work?

Schools often run multiple sailing courses for different levels and abilities across the calendar so you shouldn’t have any difficulty in finding a course that’s right for you. Many UK sailing courses are geared to earning a certain qualification such as one of the Royal Yachting Association’s (RYA) and are backed by the UK Government’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Popular RYA qualifications include Competent Crew (for beginners), Day Skipper (intermediate) and Yachtmaster (Ocean or Coastal - advanced). Sailing Schools also offer lessons on smaller craft such as dinghies. Courses vary in duration, from 1 day to several days.

How much does sailing school cost?

Sailing course costs vary depending on location, duration and the input required – teachers, vessels, materials – and whether food and accommodation is included. In the UK a typical Competent Crew course might cost around £500, a Day Skipper course will cost around £600, and a Yachtmaster course will cost around several thousand for both the theory and practical courses. Prices may be higher in high season and lower in the off-season.
