Round the Island Race
The mother of all races. Every year 15,000 sailors from as far away as the US and New Zealand descend on Cowes to take part in the legendary Round the Island Race. Starting at the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, participants follow a 50 mile course westabout around the island, taking in the famous Needles and St. Catherine’s Point before returning back to the Solent and the finish line.
While professional sailors will have their eye on the Gold Roman Bowl, the race is open to sailors of all abilities. Boats of every shape and size can compete for one of the nearly 200 trophies awarded on the day, including the Tenacity Trophy, awarded to the last boat to finish within the time limit.
