The Tendrr Guide to Sailing & Yacht Clubs
What is a Sailing Club?
Sailing Clubs (also often called Yacht Clubs) exist to help people get out on the water, connect with other sailors, and organise events as well as often helping with the practicalities of boat use and ownerships – providing mooring facilities, plus facilitating repairs and maintenance. Many UK sailing clubs have existed for a long time: well over a hundred years in the case of the Island Sailing Club and the Greenwich Yacht Club, over two hundred years in the case of the Royal Thames Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron, and nearly 300 years for the Royal Cork Yacht Club.
How do Sailing Clubs work?
Many smaller sailing clubs are almost entirely run by voluntary “staff” – often current or previous members of the club. There is a often a committee which divides responsibility between individuals along standard lines such as Club Captain, Treasurer, Social Secretary, Race Secretary etc. Some also have a “Commodore” which is effectively the most senior position and the equivalent of Chairman or President in other sporting committees.
Choosing a Sailing Club
Sailing Clubs come in all shapes and sizes, so if there are several options in your area (or you are prepared to travel) do some research and think about what you want from a club: do you want a busy race calendar with lots of competitive events? Or are you more interested in joining a club with a strong family focus? If you need storage for your boat make sure that their boatyard/mooring has capacity for you. Sailing Club fees are also a factor to consider – these are often comprised of an annual membership fee plus “boat dues” if you have your own boat and want to keep it at the club.
